Addressing the challenges within ASM cobalt mining and other commodity supply chains

The responsible sourcing of minerals and metals is crucial for ethical and sustainable supply chains. This involves addressing working conditions, children’s rights, and economic opportunities in mining communities, particularly in regions like the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). TDi and its sister organisation, The Impact Facility (TIF), have been actively involved in researching and addressing these issues.

Together, over many years, TIF and TDi have compiled key findings and resources on ASM cobalt mining and other commodity supply chains, including:

Research and Analysis:

Review of ASM cobalt mining working conditions, children’s rights, and economic opportunity in two cobalt mining communities in Lualaba Province, DRC.

Fair Cobalt Alliance:

The efforts in the DRC led to the establishment of the Fair Cobalt Alliance, reflecting on challenges around the mines and child labour in the local communities.

IGF Commissioned Report:

TDi was commissioned by the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF) to research and write a report on the impact of new mining technologies on local procurement practices in the DRC.
