An overview report of the global zinc value chain, supply chain risks, and initiatives supporting sustainable development

Zinc

TDi was commissioned to conduct targeted research and compile a report outlining the structure of the global zinc value chain. The objective was to assess supply chain risks, identify data gaps, and evaluate initiatives and projects within the zinc supply chain aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Scope of research and analysis

Comprehensive coverage:

The research encompassed the mining of virgin materials, zinc recycling, and downstream examination of zinc’s applications in the corrosion protection of steel via galvanising and its use in fertilisers.

Value chain diagram:

The report includes a detailed value chain diagram illustrating the global zinc supply chain for virgin materials and zinc recycling up to the stages of galvanising steel and zinc fertiliser production. The mapping also delineates the production of by-products within the supply chain.

National production statistics:

The mapping incorporates national production statistics of the top 10 zinc producer countries, identifying specific zinc production areas within these nations, particularly in cases where zinc production is concentrated in specific regions.

Risk assessment and analysis

Regional risk mapping: The risk analysis involves a generic regional risk mapping to identify potential risks associated with the zinc supply chain.

Algorithmic analysis: Concrete allegations and reports of human rights or environmental risks were analysed using TDI’s proprietary Search360 algorithm, which includes searches in English, Spanish, and Chinese to provide a comprehensive assessment of potential risks.
