Working to enhance community engagement with Centerra Gold Mongolia

TDi Sustainability was tasked with analysing the CSR, social programming, and environmental management policies, practices, and activities of Centerra Gold Mongolia (CGM), and reviewing these aspects against prevailing international standards and norms – particularly the safeguard standards of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and providing assisting in implementing improvements.

TDi designed and built policy, procedures and a plan for Centerra to conduct consultations with communities in impacted areas, and enable the company to achieve its social license to operate.

TDi’s review and in-country validation of Centerra’s policies and practices, included:

Community relations

Draft CSR policy framework and a summary of findings from the community consultations and an agreed framework for the development of a Stakeholder Engagement Plan.

Socio-economic programme and environmental management and monitoring:

Criteria governing the distribution and project selection using CGM Community Development Funds. Plus a revised set of indicators for participatory monitoring and evaluation of the CGM CSR program, including documentation of a workshop to review consultancy findings, draft CSR policy, and CDF criteria.

Analysis and gap identification:

The review involved analysing the policies and practices of CGM against international standards and conducting a gap analysis to identify alignment with prevailing international best practices. This included special attention to the safeguard policies of the EBRD.
