Bettercoal Code
Bettercoal
Overview
The Responsible Commodities Sourcing Initiative (RECOSI) is a not-for-profit organisation established by major European utilities to promote responsible commodity sourcing and supply chain management. RECOSI operates the Bettercoal Programme, which was established by major coal buyers to promote continuous improvement in the environmental, social and governance performance of coal mining and sourcing.
The Bettercoal Code 2.0 is an internationally recognised standard for assessing, assuring and improving ethical, environmental and social performance in the coal mining supply chain. It comprises 144 provisions under 12 principles covering governance, social and environmental issues. Coal producers are assessed against the Code through a process that includes independent third-party assessment and verification, and assessed producers develop tailored Continuous Improvement Plans to address identified areas for improvement. The Bettercoal Programme is not a certification scheme; rather, it provides a framework for continuous improvement in responsible coal production and sourcing.
