Critical Minerals

How TDi connects critical minerals value chains

Critical minerals move through a long chain – mining, processing, manufacturing, component assembly, product assembly, retail, and back through recycling – with communities, investors, regulators, standard-setters, traders and industry associations all connected at different points.
Bringing together actors across the length and breadth of complex supply chains.
TDi Sustainability is one of a small number of firms that works directly with actors across this entire system, which means we can advise downstream companies on what their upstream suppliers need, and advise upstream producers on what downstream buyers and investors require.
TDi works across every layer of this system.

UPSTREAM | Mining and Processing

TDi works directly with major mining companies on ASM coexistence strategy, audit preparation, systems and strategy development, community engagement and social license to operate.
Projects we’ve worked on, include:
  • Supporting a large-scale gold mining company with its ASM coexistence and engagement strategy, including stakeholder mapping and community consultations
  • Working with an industrial diamond mining company on a feasibility study for community engagement with ASM populations surrounding the site
  • Developing a due diligence and audit-preparation system for a copper mining company, aligned to the Copper Mark Standard

MIDSTREAM | Manufacturers and OEMs

Manufacturers and OEMs face a different challenge – turning upstream risk data into decisions they can act on.

TDi’s approach is augmented due diligence – combining digital intelligence from the TDi Digital Platform, human expertise, and on-the-ground validation.

Projects we’ve worked on include:

  • Supporting a major automotive OEM on supply chain visibility and CAHRA Index review, alongside CSDDD and EU Battery Regulation compliance
  • Working with a major aerospace company on development of its Critical and Strategic Raw Materials strategy
  • Working with an electronics company on its EU Battery Regulation-aligned due diligence management system.

DOWNSTREAM | Brands and retailers

At the consumer-facing end of the chain, TDi’s work has included:

  • Developing a 23-material prioritisation roadmap for a consumer electronics brand’s responsible sourcing strategy through to 2030
  • Supporting a luxury jewellery brand’s chain-of-custody requirements through a certified small-scale gold supply partnership
  • Developing a forced labour risk toolkit for a major electronics company, to support compliance with tightening forced labour regulation.

Regulators, standard setters and industry bodies

TDi’s role here goes beyond advising – we convene. Projects we’ve been involved with include:

  • TDi is a permanent Secretariat member of the Solar Stewardship Initiative, which we helped to develop, and now has more than 40 endorsing companies
  • We provide the Project Management Office for the Circularity in Primary Pharmaceutical Packaging Accelerator (CiPPPA)
  • We facilitate the National Mining Association’s sustainability task force
  • TDi chairs the Secretariat of the Natural Polymers Group (NPG)

On the policy side, TDi advises government departments and multilateral institutions on critical mineral regulations and strategy.

We have also worked with standard setting initiatives on the development of many of the standards on which the industry relies, and carry out second- and third-party audits.

Investors and finance

For investors and development finance institutions, TDi provides due diligence support that benchmarks specific investments against multilateral development banks’ own policies and OECD guidelines – helping capital providers understand the ESG risk in a critical minerals investment before it’s made.

Our projects have included:

  • Analysing definitions of “legacy” in mining and the role investors can play in supporting positive legacies, for the Global Investor Commission on Mining 2030
  • Conducting limited due diligence on an early-stage mining company ahead of an investment decision
  • Delivering a comprehensive ESG gap assessment and strategic roadmap for a national mining sector, commissioned by a major multilateral fina institution
  • Due diligence for exploration-stage mining investment on Indigenous Peoples’ rights.

FAQs

Connecting the critical mineral value chain

Does TDi work with both upstream and downstream companies?

Yes – this is one of the things that sets TDi apart. We advise mining companies at the upstream end and brands and OEMs at the downstream end, often within the same supply chain, which means we can tell each side what the other actually needs rather than working from one perspective alone.

What role does TDi play in industry initiatives?

We hold formal convening roles across several industry bodies – permanent Secretariat member of the Solar Stewardship Initiative, Project Management Office for CiPPPA, and sustainability task force facilitator for the National Mining Association, among others – rather than only advising standard-setters and industry organisations from the outside.

Can TDi support investors in identifying critical minerals supply chain risk?

Yes, we help investors and development finance institutions understand ESG risk before capital is committed.
