IRMA Standard for Responsible Mining
Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA)
Overview
The Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) is a multi-stakeholder organisation established to meet global demand for more socially and environmentally responsible mining. The IRMA Standard for Responsible Mining was developed through a multi-year, multi-stakeholder process led by IRMA’s Board of Directors and Secretariat, with input from representatives of IRMA’s core sectors and other stakeholders. The Standard is structured around four overarching principles: Business Integrity; Planning and Managing for Positive Legacies; Social Responsibility; and Environmental Responsibility.
The Standard is designed to apply to industrial- and large-scale mining operations and all mined materials, with the exception of uranium and thermal coal. IRMA provides independent third-party assessment against the Standard, with mines able to demonstrate different levels of achievement (IRMA 50, IRMA 75 and IRMA 100), as well as IRMA Transparency for mines that publicly disclose their assessment results.
