Major Incident Risk Management in Mining

3rd November 2026 | 10:00–11:15am (UK GMT) / 6:00–7:15pm (PHST)

Coming Soon…

A major incident in mining rarely has consequences confined to the mine itself. Ground failure, fires, explosions, inundation and tailings failures can have far-reaching impacts, particularly when compounded by natural hazards and increasingly unpredictable climate conditions.

How can mining companies better anticipate these interconnected risks, prevent major incidents and prepare for consequences that extend well beyond their operations?

This webinar will bring together expertise in mining safety, engineering, environmental safeguards and risk management to examine where conventional approaches may fall short, what stronger risk management looks like in practice, and how the sector can improve preparedness and accountability.

Key Topics:

Drawing on practical experience, the panel will explore:

  • Recognising major hazards across the life cycle: Understanding major hazards, how failure can occur and the critical controls required, from inception and design through operations and closure, including how operational, natural and climate-related hazards interact and amplify consequences.
  • Looking beyond the mine boundary: Understanding potential consequences for workers, communities, critical infrastructure and ecosystems, and involving potentially affected stakeholders in risk communication and emergency preparedness.
  • Strengthening prevention through operational assurance: Building operational understanding and ownership of critical controls, with routine first-line assurance to verify effectiveness against defined performance standards and trigger timely action when performance deteriorates or falls outside acceptable limits.
  • Building confidence and accountability: Using evidence of critical-control performance to inform operational, engineering and investment decisions, supported by clear reporting, timely escalation to executives and Boards, and transparent communication with potentially affected stakeholders.

This webinar was ointly organised by TDi Sustainability and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), as part of our Critical Minerals for the Clean Energy Transition Knowledge Series.
